Our adventures were low key this time. I confess that I slept a great deal on the Turtle Mountain trip. I was exhausted and the weather was perfect for sleeping. I zonked out for 8-9 hours every night – despite screaming Loons — and took long naps too. No matter, with the skies light until nearly 11 PM I had lots of morning walks around the campground, evening hikes on the trails, and van trips to find ducks. As I explored the State Park by van, I found cabins, even a yurt (lots of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing around here in the winter). Wildlife watching, reading, and writing filled in all the other time.
I did not fish. I stowed my tackle box in a spot that is inaccessible after Half Moon is fully set up and forgot to take it out. I had the pole, but not much inclination to fish up here. Didn’t swim either. I found myself drawn more to the woods, the small lakes, and duck-filled ponds.
Birds were a highlight of the trip, of course. I drove down gravel roads, through farms and pastures, quite close to the Canadian border. I never did see a sign so I am not certain where I was.
The ducks knew where they were! I saw several new kinds, including Canvas Ducks and Redheads. Lots of Blue-Winged Teal, Ruddy Ducks, and Loons. I even saw a loon sitting on her nest. Of course, I had already heard them at night so I knew Loons were around somewhere.

In the Aspen woodlands I saw a Sprague’s Pipit for the first time.
Sprague’s Pipit, a declining prairie bird
A large dragonfly, which I named the Kamikaze, flew in swarms over the roads and end up crushed under my wiper blades and on front grill At the campsite, they flew overhead in pairs- mating incessantly in flight, oblivious to trees they were slamming into.
Fungus covered many of the fallen and decaying trees. Such beautiful formations
Hiking was great- easy trails and lots to view:

Turtles always greet us!
On this day I get a phone call about a church emergency, so I will cutting the trip short by two nights. On the way back I have a long stopover at Arrowood National Wildlife Reserve, which I will share next time!
