“Alone”, on the History Channel

I invited myself to Kerry and Meghan’s to watch the DNC grand finale, this past Thursday. Kerry was off and Meghan worked. I arrived around 11:30 PM so I could have some time with Kerry and time on the web. The dogs sniffed each other in greeting and I got a big Kerry hug.

Kerry showed me the Cabela’s fly fishing bag/pack that he got with the Cabela’s gift certificate I gave him for his 30th. He can strap the bag around his waist or up, around his chest. The front two pockets have magnetic closures, which are so much better than zippers when you must move quickly to change a fly. I have quite a thing for Cabela’s bags myself and I admired, even envied it! He commented about how he inherited my love of good gear. Sweet!!

Kerry is not “With Her” and not much was happening in Philly early in the day, so he “allowed” me to watch CNN for only a few moments before he flipped to “Alone” on the History Channel. I didn’t feel irritated for long. “Alone” ! Woooo who. Our kind of show.

“Alone” is a reality TV show about 10 people who are placed, alone, in a series of wilderness locations on Vancouver Island. Their task is to survive as long as they can. The last one standing wins a $500,00 cash award. Yes, contestants are left with some gear, but no food. They must figure it out! Since they are on or near coastlines, food is available if they can get it. Each contestant has a video camera/tripod and records their own adventures. They also have a satellite phone so they can call in if they are “finished” and want to go home. At this point in the season, only 4 people are left, alone and surviving. One is a woman.

Finally, a TV show for me! Kerry and I would love to be contestants. We could be the only Mother/Son duo who think surviving on a beautiful, remote island is the epitome of coolness. Not together, of course, but left off individually by boat in our own territory. I hope for a quiet cove where Bald Eagles nest in tall trees and Dungeness crab twittle around on the beach. Endless days spent wandering your territory and looking for ways to survive. Bears? Fish-stealing seals? Lonely star-filled nights? Bring it on! What could be better than being dropped off here:

Kerry, as a former Marine has more survival skills than I do, and of course, his new fly fishing bag. I am “experienced” however, and  I know I could do it, especially since I live alone and know how to thrive in solitude. For many of the contestants, being alone is the biggest problem.

Anyway, if you have some time, watch some current or back episodes at the History Channel. You might see one of us someday!
