I decided my constitution was not so great—my knowledge of the American Constitution. As Gold Star dad, Mr. Khan, offered his pocket copy of the constitution to Trump (DNC convention last week), I thought….hmmmm. Maybe I should read it again.
Surely I read it in high school government class? I know some of the main words, like the Preamble, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union….”.
I can paraphrase the current Amendments under debate (especially the 2nd amendment, 1st amendment).
I would recognize some sections. Most Americans can. But that does not mean I have fully read the greatest civil document in the world, one which gives me the freedoms I crave. I downloaded a free Kindle version from Amazon. Great reading for the most part.
I am not the only person who stirred at Mr. Khan’s challenge to Trump (have you read it?). Mashable, the New York Times, and others report that the pocket version of the U.S. Constitution is an Amazon best-seller since the convention (#2 the week following). Now that’s a great trend: Americans brushing up on Constitution 101.
What can this mean? We will be much more conversant about our Constitution. However, I think the real challenge, put forth by Mr. Kahn, is for us to more fully understand our rights and, perhaps, not take them for granted. We are a spoiled people whose rights generate entitlement. We often forget that the rights come with great responsibility to others and ourselves. Living free is a team sport.
God bless you Mr. Khan for your courage and clarity of conviction. I am a better American today because of you and your families’ sacrifice.
