I finally tracked down my busy son and daughter-in-law and shared my summer news. Now I can tell everyone–I will be a camp host for the National Forest Service, right outside of Yellowstone National Park in Gallatin National Forest. This gig is a bit different from most camp host jobs. My main task is to educate campers about how to safely camp around grizzlies. I will greet the people at each site then share safety expectations. I will also monitor the campground to be sure they do not leave coolers under the camper or elsewhere outside.
The campground is small (17 sites) and has several horse corrals for those campers lucky enough to ride into the wilderness area. Camping is primitive, which means no utilities and each person must “pack in and pack out” what they need. I will have access to a vault toilet but no shower. No water, either! However, the NFS staff will bring in water and propane for me. Summer interns and other staff will do the other camp host chores, like collecting camping fees and cleaning bathrooms. I will fill in there when needed.
Most camp host jobs are strictly volunteer, but I will receive a small stipend through a special grizzly grant. I start May 5 and will work until mid-to-late September. Other critters in the area: wolves, moose, elk, and bison.
The campground is near Gardiner, MT and the north entrance to Yellowstone. I have entered Yellowstone through this entrance before, both as a camper and a member of a winter wolf sighting expedition. I also passed nearby last August when I started this nomadic journey.
I feel so blessed once again. If you plan to travel near here, I can give you the specifics about my location.
I think Aunt Bee would approve!
Fantastic gig! But no water! Well, you are an old hand at adapting, so I’m sure you will be fine. I get so much vicarious pleasure reading about your adventures, Jane!
I have a 60 gallon water tank under the camper! The NFS folks will keep me supplied. And I will be recycling lots of plastic water jugs!
Sounds great! It will be interesting.
Maybe you will come for a visit??? Hugs
