As soon as I start thinking that I am the last crazy adventurer on the continent, I run into someone who humbles me. I never actually saw these folks, although I was hanging around nearby for over an hour doing my laundry. Their vehicle, however, is what alerted me to some serious travelers through the Americas.
This is the view of their vehicle that caught my attention. It is an older Toyota Land Cruiser in mint condition. As I walked towards the hood I saw the foreign license plate and a decal that said “Germany.”
I walked around the vehicle, thinking they might show up. The flags on their doors represent all of Central and South America, and the others are for Canada and Germany.
I loved this RV so much. It is sturdy and made for the long haul. The tires are 20-ply or more, if such a thing exists.
I noticed on the back of the truck that the owners have a website:
I was still waiting for laundry so I visited their site. They travel for over a year at a time and have quite a few stories on their site. It was in German, of course, but my web browser did a so-so translation so I got the jist of it. The man is about my age, and the woman is much younger. They seem to be independently wealthy and travel most of the time in their vehicle. The brought it to the Americas (their second trip) on a boat, which makes the most sense.
I folded up my laundry and never met the couple, but I was inspired by their journey. Not that I have any plans to travel in Central/South America by myself, so don’t worry! After this summer of epic travel, I may stay put for a while, wandering only in the Southwest US until the bug hits again.
I’d be impressed too! Some people live just to travel!
I have a heavy dose of that too!
