I have to share my new discovery about finding more free (modern) E- books! The best gift of all this season.
I have been looking for a copy of Kathleen Norris’s book Dakota: A Spiritual Biography. Kindle Unlimited (9.99/month for unlimited books) does not offer it. I could buy the Kindle version for 9.99, but it is not a book I want to keep forever, just want to reread it. And I have already spent my entire December book budget.
I could obtain the book through interlibrary loan–my pre e-book source of books– but Wishek does not have a staffed public library. I was hoping that the North Dakota State Library had an e-book program but, no (I did find lots of online stuff about pioneer history up here).
Then, I remembered finding–a while back–a large online e-book library, which offered books for free. At the time I had good library access to free e-books (Wheatland library) so didn’t investigate.
I need you now, OpenLibrary.org! I signed up, clicked on the verification link in my email, and within 30 seconds, had access to Dakota. You have several download options, depending on how you want to read the book. If an e-book version is not available, Open Library tells you where to find a hard copy online or at nearby libraries (via World Cat). Jamestown, ND has the largest library near me, so when I go up there for shopping, I can add a stop to their library–if they have the book.
While at OpenLibrary.org, I also “added” my own book, “Whirled: Life, Loss, and Healing on the High Plains.” It may take some time for them to aquire the book; I don’t know how that all works.
Well, back to Dakota!
